Wet macular degeneration is abnormal growth of bloodvessels from the choroidal layer of the retina. These blood vessels ooze out blood and fluid into the retina causing problems with vision.Straight lines look wavy, loss of central vision and there are blindspots. These abnormal blood vessels eventually scar and lead to permanant loss of central vision.
Macular degeneration may be heriditary. People who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, light skinned, female and light eye colored are prone to macular degeneration.
Doctors see tiny yellow deposits called drusens under the retina and theres pigment clumping in retina. They use the Amslers grid which has a pattern of straight lines. Some of the lines might seem wavy or missing to the person with ARMD.
OCT/Angiography is done. In angiography the doctor injects a dye into the veins of arm. Photos are taken as soon as the dye reaches the eye and flows through the bloodvessels of retina. if the new bloodvessels are leaking fluid or blood in macula the photos will show the exact spot and type of Macular degeneration.
There is no cure for macular degeneration but treatment may slow down the progression of the diseaese. The doctors can use the following to reduce the progression:
Antiangiogenesis- block the developement of new bloodvessels and leakage from abnormal vessels within the eye.
Laser therapy
photodynamic laser therapy
Low vision aids help by magnifying the images of nearby objects.
