In the Tear Break up Time test, fluroscein is put onto the eye and the tearfilm is observered under the slit lamp. Here the patient tries not to blink until the first dry spot developes. The longer it takes for the first dry spot to appear more stable is the tear film. If time is greater than 10 seconds its considered normal, 5-10 seconds its marginal, less than 5 seconds its abnormal.
An abnormal tear film can explain dry eye in a patient with normal amount of tears.

Nice information, many thanks to the author. It is incomprehensible to me now, but in general, the usefulness and significance is overwhelming. Thanks again and good luck!
